Overview

The Student Linking Interface adds students to a teacher's class on their first day. The old interface/process required teachers to add students to their class manually, taking about 2-3 minutes per student device. This resulted in compounding wait times leading to students not getting added to a class.

The solution was a single, central interface that organized all student linking requests, and allowed the teacher to add all students simultaneously.

The new design had wildly successful results:

  • Link multiple/all students from one central device
  • Reduce classroom set-up time from 45 minutes to around 2 minutes
  • Eliminate estimated 2,233+ support calls related to old process
  • Reduce teacher tutorial/training time from 1 hour to zero
Defining the Problem
I started by visiting classrooms and talking to teachers. I brought devs with me to observe first-hand the teacher's experience.

1

Site visits built commitment with the team.

2

I asked the team to participate in data synthesis.

Affinity Diagramming organized data

Summarized User Problems & Desires, and defined Design Goals

Prototyping / Storyboarding / Iterating
I developed a paper prototype of a solution that met the requirements pulled from interviews and research.

Paper Prototypes demonstrated a robust solution.

Hi-fi Mockup of interface helped clarify functionality.

Final Design & Testing
With the concept finalized, I mocked up the layout, set up a features roadmap for the devs, and we built it, testing with teachers along the way.
1

A Flow Diagram helped me visualize the rules for what was possible for users that were logged in vs. users that were not.

2

Features Roadmap laid out our development schedule.

3

Usability Testing finalized the design.
